Since 2002, I have worked with adults and children who are emotionally distressed and who want support to make changes to improve the way that they cope with a range of life experiences. I have worked within the National Health Service with people with learning disabilities, homeless adults with mental health problems and between 2009 and 2014, I worked with adults with chronic pain. I have also worked with children and young people with a range of difficulties (including trauma, bullying, behavioural difficulties and low self esteem).
My experience includes work within a charitable organisation for adults with drug and alcohol addiction and for adults and family members/partners of adults who are HIV positive.
I have experience of working with clients who experience depression, anxiety (including phobias) and pain (including pain that doesn’t have a medical diagnosis). I have also worked with clients who have experienced childhood trauma and adult trauma (including accidents and domestic violence), bereavement, adjustment, difficulties with assertiveness/confidence, self harm and low self esteem. Furthermore, I have worked with clients with addiction to prescribed medication, to alcohol or illicit substances. Finally, I have worked with adults and young people who are coming to terms with their sexuality and personal identity.
If I feel unable to work with a specific difficulty or if I feel your need would be better met by another service, I will be honest with you about this.
I am a Visiting Scholar for Teesside University and I have published a number of research papers in the area of Domestic Violence. I have also co-edited an academic book. I undertake Expert Witness assessments where I write reports for court.
